Sleeve repair welding of in-service gas pipelines

The primary objective of this project was to develop a computational model to represent the Sleeve Repair Welding process of In-Service Gas Pipelines.
To include the various physical phenomena involved with the real process, a multiphysics approach was implemented.

To this effect, a combined computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) approach was taken, as follows:

  1. The heat flux generated from the welding phase of the process by considering the fluid flow inside the duct using CFD;
  2. A thermal finite element analysis was then used to quantify the resulting residual stresses in the duct and the Sleeve.
