Cold bending of thermally insulated pipes

Petrobras, through its engineering department, asked the ESSS providing consulting services in CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) applied to the development of analysis by finite element method (FEM) for the simulation of bending steel pipes fitted with thermal insulation system simulation in order to replace the pipeline network in southeastern Brazil.

Finite Element Model: Boundary Conditions and Loading

Boundary conditions were prescribed by using "Joints" which are able to restrict displacements/rotations in DOFs of interest

Model Geometry and Material Properties

Perfect bonding between layers is assumed (multi-body part)

Finite Element Model: Illustrative Results

Model is capable of capturing wrinkling of the duct due to accumulating plastic deformation at the end of the curving process
